It won't happen to me!

This is the phrase I hear most when I visit businesses and talk about their Disaster Recovery plan. The problem is, it does happen and it happens all the time!

We ask our clients a simple question "If you switched your computer off now and couldn't switch it back on, how would that affect your business?"

If your answer is "it would cause us some problems!" Then you need to talk to us now before something does happen to your computer.

Why do computers fail?
The most common reason we find is due to a hard disk drive failure. The hard disk drive spins round 7,000 times a minute within your hot computer sometimes without being switched off for weeks at a time. As they say - "something's got to give!". There are lots of other reasons why you may need to use your backup:

 • Computer Viruses can destroy valuable computer data and files.
 • User error - either intentional or not can be the cause of data loss.
 • Power spikes and surges can significantly damage your computer.
 • Environmental factors such as fires, floods etc. can destroy your computer.
 • Lost or stolen equipment.

These are a few of the main reasons why having an effective backup solution in place should be paramount for your business.

My computer is not worth much - I don't need to back it up.
This may be true. Computers are cheap to buy these days but the data you store on it may have been collected over many years. We got a call from a medical professional whose computer hard drive had failed. She thought everything was being backed up but found out that it hadn't. She lost over 10 years of patient data. As you can imagine, she learnt a very hard lesson.
